The Best Time to Paint Your Home's Exterior in Georgia

If you own a home in Loganville, Grayson, or anywhere in Gwinnett and Walton counties, you have a much longer exterior painting season than most of the country. That's the good news. The complication is that Georgia's two biggest paint problems — humidity and direct heat — peak during the exact months most people decide to paint.

The best windows are spring, roughly April through early June, and fall, September through October. Both give you moderate temperatures and lower humidity. Midsummer is workable, but it takes planning: surface temperatures on a south-facing wall in July can run far hotter than the air temperature, and paint that dries too fast doesn't bond properly. It skins over on top while staying soft underneath, which is what leads to peeling a year or two later.

Humidity is the other half. Most exterior coatings want relative humidity under about 85% and need the surface genuinely dry. After a summer afternoon thunderstorm, siding can hold moisture well into the next morning even when it looks dry. Painting over trapped moisture causes blistering, and no amount of quality paint prevents it.

The practical scheduling answer is to chase the shade. We start on the east elevation in the morning while it's still cool, move around the house as the sun does, and stop with enough daylight left for the last coat to set up before evening dew. That's slower than blasting through one side at a time, and it's the difference between a finish that holds and one that fails early.

Prep is what actually determines how long the job lasts, and it's where cheap bids cut corners. A proper exterior starts with pressure washing to strip off pollen, mildew, and chalking — and in this climate, mildew is not optional to address, because painting over it means it grows through the new coat. Then comes scraping everything loose, sanding edges smooth, replacing any rotted trim or siding, caulking gaps, and spot-priming bare wood.

One Georgia-specific note: south and west elevations take far more UV punishment than north-facing walls, and it's completely normal for those sides to need attention a few years before the rest of the house. Touching them up on schedule costs a fraction of waiting until the whole exterior fails.
